Dude, Where's My Car?

We live about 100 yards from the boys' school. I love it that we never have to drive to school in the Morning Drop Off Melee. Instead, we walk over about 5 minutes before school starts. However, Finn, in particular, always asks to drive.

Yes, once again my hardy mountain children show their true colors.

Anyway, yesterday I did actually drive over to the school in the late morning. On Sunday, we had the biggest fundraiser of the year, Wild West Day, out at a local ranch. I had to return a tent and some other stuff to the office. The tent was a little too heavy to lug even 100 yards. Or maybe I'm just wimpy.

So I drove over, parked, dragged the tent and other stuff inside, and went to the lunchroom where I was having lunch with Finn (have I raved about how this year our school has 100% scratch-cooked lunches?) and then helping supervise kids composting their trash. And, as always happens, a teacher grabbed me and asked me to do something else and yadda yadda yadda, two hours later I was finally heading home.

I did some work, some laundry--the usual.

When it was time for school to be out, I walked to meet the boys. Homework was completed, snacks were eaten, and then it was time to go to Finn's gymnastics in the next town.

The boys went out to the garage ahead of me.

Boys: The car isn't in the garage.

Me: Oh hahaha, you guys, come on, get in, we don't want to be late.

Boys: Seriously, the car isn't in the garage.

Me: Look again. Maybe you just can't see it if the light didn't come on. It is black, afterall. (Yes, I really said that)

And then I paused. Did I park out front? No.

And then reality set in. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY! SOMEONE HAS STOLEN THE CAR!

And then I paused again. Why would someone steal a 1999 VW Passat Wagon with nearly 190,000 miles on it, rear speakers that don't work, electric locks that don't work, a paint job that has now suffered through four mountain winters and is covered with at least an inch of dust from being at a dude ranch the day before...and leave approximately $10,000 worth of bikes? (Yes, the bikes in our garage are collectively worth more than both of our vehicles combined)

It made no sense.

I was puzzled. What a stupid car thief.

And then I came to my senses and walked over to school for the third time that day.

PS: The saddest part about this story is that when I left school after lunch, I walked RIGHT PAST my dear, dusty car. Right past it. No clue. No clue at all.

Nick's Hair

Today I got my hair cut. Not short, like I had originally planned, but Nick, my hair guru, cut some layers into it and, of course, styled it like I never can. So check me out now because my hair won't look like this again until I see Nick again. In like six months.

Some of you wanted to what it looks like. OK, maybe one person said that.

Anyway.

I feel totally silly sitting here and having pictures taken of myself.

The back view.

From the side. Tara was totally cracking me up, making modeling comments a la Austin Powers.

Wishing for a chin and nose job about now.

This is the first photo we took. It didn't come out exactly like planned. Tara's dog is licking my toes. It tickles.

I wore it down all day. I hope Nick is pleased. Even when I ate, I didn't put it up. I did get some hair near the danger zone of my mouth while I was trying to eat my salad for lunch, but it all worked out OK with a little behind the ear tucking.

But then it was time to make dinner. It was about 95 degrees. I did this:

Don't hate me, Nick.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?

And now, by popular demand (actually just by one person's demand), is a Hair Update.

FYI: I have curly hair. Growing up, I hated it. Let me reiterate: HATED IT. It was the 70s--the era of Marsha Brady and her super straight hair secured by one barrette at her temple. I begged my Mom to put my hair into pigtails like Tara who did have Marsha hair (is two considered pig tails and one a pony tail?), but she always said, "It won't look right," because instead of hanging in nice straight "tails" my hair curled up into a truly curly pig-like tail. I was sad. Oh, how I wanted super straight hair. But it wasn't meant to be. I was born with a 'fro. No lie.

Over the years I've sported some different hairstyles, but there aren't a whole lot of options with short, curly hair. It tends to always look the same. And if you cut it too short, you look like a Q-tip, especially in the summer when your curls adhere to your head in the humidity of Central Ohio.

The longest my hair has been before now was in grad school when it was nearly shoulder length. It wasn't a good look, but it was summer and I was traveling around Europe with friends so who really cared? We had hats on much of the time anyway. As an aside, ask Marci about why you shouldn't put your favorite hat in a backpack with a peach.

Anyway, not a lot of hair stylists can really work well with curly hair. If they don't have it themselves, I think they're somewhat mystified by it. And then we moved, and I found Nick. Actually I should say that Tara forced me on Nick, but it sounds better to say I found Nick. Nick is a hair stylist with curly hair. My life has never been the same.

Tara and Erin have both had mostly long hair throughout their lives. Right now they both have short hair because they cut it for Locks of Love already. So I, the usually short-haired one, am the only one with long hair now. It's been an interesting journey.

Two years ago we all, including my niece, Ellie, decided to grow our hair for Locks of Love. Tara and Erin already had long hair and mine probably wasn't even chin length at the time. So they had a little jump on me. I'll never forget when Tara told Craig we were growing our hair. Instead of commenting on his wife's efforts, he stared at her with his mouth open: "Natalie is going to grow her hair? Natalie? She'll look like Elaine Benes!"

That made me laugh. I figured he was probably right.

So now after all of this growing and not weaving of my hair--Locks of Love supposedly doesn't accept color treated hair--and enduring comments from my mother: "Your hair is so long. . .and dark," I think I'm almost there. Thank goodness because over the weekend I had to listen to some comments from people who shall remain nameless telling me I resemble an aging Janis Joplin. Or that I should be in an 80s hair band.

The cons: Long hair swings forward and gets in your mouth when you're trying to eat a sandwich. It gets in your mouth when the wind blows. It sticks to your neck when it's hot. It takes a long time to dry. It gets tangled and dreadlock-ish on a regular basis. It takes a lot more shampoo and conditioner to take care of it.

The pros: It is fun, however, to braid it, put it up in a pony tail, put it in pigtails for skiing, clip it up in some sort of twist, etc. After all of these years, doing different things with my hair every day is a nice change.

I've heard varying things about what length I need to go to before I cut it. I've heard as little as eight inches and as much as 12 inches. If it's eight, I'm there. If it's 12, I'm hanging on. I've got 12 inches of cutable hair, but it'll be right up against my head--a look I've had before and would like to steer clear of from now on.

I usually wear it clipped back because I can't stand having it fall into my face. Which basically tells me that once this hair growing folly is over, I'll go to Nick and have him give me some short, curly do again and order will be restored in the world.

The front view. . .

The rear view. . .

(I know it doesn't look like 10 inches, but with curly hair, they pull it straight to measure it.)

Not exactly Marsha Brady, but it's growing on me.

Eight Facts About Me

Mom on the Run tagged me for a meme: Eight Facts About Me. I love these things. Mostly because I get to go on and on about myself. As if I didn't do that all the time anyway. But this is now an official license to Go On and On About Myself Ad Nauseam.

Here are the rules:

1. Each player starts with eight random fact/habits about themselves.

2. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.

3. At the end of your blog post, you need to choose people to get tagged and list their name.

4. Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged and to read your blog.

**********************************************************

Eight Facts About Me:

1. I am fairly certain I can consume more popcorn than anyone in the world. There are many things in my life I could sacrifce. Popcorn isn't one of them. I gave a PowerPoint presentation about it once.

2. I have a recurring nightmare that I have coral growing out of my feet. Under the coral, my feet are orange.

3. Lima beans make me want to retch. My sisters don't like them either. One time my mom put lima beans in her homemade vegetable soup. We didn't speak to her for days.

4. For good luck when I fly, I carry a piece of a blanket, called a silkie, in my pocket. It's not the original silkie I had when I was young--I tragically sucked that up in the vaccuum cleaner when I was in college. So I went to the fabric store and bought a whole roll of the silkie stuff and just snip off pieces as I need them when I fly. To my knowledge, I have never flown without it. One time when we were in England I thought I lost it. I thought I was going to have to stay in England indefinitely (which I wouldn't mind, actually). Then I found it and we were able to come home on schedule.

5. I have very curly hair. My sisters have totally straight hair. No one can believe we're related when they look at our hair. But I guess they could also be mystified by the fact that my sisters have thin thighs and I don't. Personally, I would rather have thin thighs and straight hair.

6. My favorite sitcom of all time is MASH. I could watch it endlessly. One day I dream of owning the entire series on DVD. My dad looks and acts like Alan Alda and even runs like him. He also runs like Dick van Dyke. He runs like a cross of Alan Alda and Dick van Dyke. I wonder if my sisters and I have told him this? I suspect we have.

7. I am a middle child. Totally.

8. When I was in college, I used to stay with people's kids when they went out of town. Once I had a job that was a week long. Then I had a week's break before going back for another week with the same kids. By the middle of the last week, I developed a nervous tic in my eye. I called my mom and told her I was never having kids and that I REALLY meant it. She laughed at me.

I could go on, but I'll stop per the meme's instructions.

I'm tagging: Ashley, Laurie, Kristie, and MARCI!!! Leeann, I'm leaving you alone because you just did one and I don't want to cause you meme stress.

All About Me

It occurred to me that even though I've been writing on Finn's page for nearly four years, you might not know a lot about me. And who doesn't want to know about me? Ahem. I'm sure that there are a few things you've been able to deduce over time. That I'm a slightly chubby, neurotic, germaphobe mother of two who likes to put off until tomorrow what she should be doing today, likes to eat popcorn then exercise fanatically and then weigh herself and wonder why she hasn't lost anything. Things like that.

So here's a little bit more about me. Because I'm sure you won't have any inner peace until you know these details about me. Feel free to post your own "about me" in the guestbook! I don't want to hog the limelight.

I am infamous for:
Driving off with things on the roof of the car. Cordless phones, cell phones, sippy cups, cups from fast food restaurants, medicine cups. I also forget to close the hatchback on the car sometimes—I figure it out when I look in the rearview mirror and marvel at how clean the glass suddenly is.

My favorite color is:
Yellow

Favorite season:
Winter—which makes no sense because I’m always cold.

If they made a movie about my life _______________________ would play in the starring role.
Meg Ryan. Or maybe Jody Foster if she permed her hair. I used to get comments that I looked like Meg Ryan. That was when I was younger. And weighed less.

My favorite food is:
Popcorn. King crab legs. Chicken and noodles.

My favorite country I’ve traveled to is:
England. Followed closely by everywhere else I’ve ever been.

In my spare time I like to:
Travel. Read. Research things on the Internet—like where I want to travel. I might go the distance and put “ski” on this list now, but that makes me sound kind of athletic. Which I’m not.

My favorite kids’ show is:
Scooby Doo. I find myself watching it even when there aren’t any kids around. . .I also like Max and Ruby.

My all-time favorite musical group is:
Depeche Mode

It is disturbing to me:
That I know all of the lyrics to the High School Musical 2 soundtrack, but I have no idea of the policies of the various presidential hopefuls.

My favorite smell is:
Coffee shops. Woodburning fires (in the fireplace, not in the hills near our house like a forest fire) on a cold fall day.

When I smell ______________________ it reminds me of_________________________.
Camay soap. . .my Grandma.

I always forget to:
Clean the boys’ ears.

If someone looked under my bed, they would find:
A pile of books, a box of videotapes (BBC America mystery shows for heavens sake—get your mind out of the gutter!), picture frames in a bag.

I procrastinate when I should be:
Working.

My least favorite household chore is:
Vacuuming.

I secretly ____________________________when no one is looking.
Eat cookie dough

My all time favorite book is:
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I know, total trash. I’m currently rereading it for about the fourth time. Why couldn't I have chosen some classic literary work?

My favorite movie is:
The Parent Trap (the original!)

Last movie I saw in a movie theater:
The Waterhorse

Last movie I watched on video:
Flags of Our Fathers—actually only saw the first half last night. I estimate it will take six months for us to finish it.

Lately, I've been watching __________________on TV.
Well, not a whole heck of a lot because of the writer's strike. So I got some DVDs from the library, which include: The Vicar of Dibley (absolutely hilarious English sitcom) and, I'm not making this up, The Winds of War. Did I really think Jan Michael Vincent was that hot with his pants hiked up that high? Some really terrible acting, but in the 80s, I loved it. I wonder if I'll sink even lower and watch North and South next.

If I could have one wish answered, it would be:
There was a cure for cancer. (Right behind that, having TiVo.)

If I could be a fictional character, I would be:
Claire Fraser (from Diana Gabaldon’s trashy Outlander series) or Miss Elizabeth Bennett

I know all the song lyrics by heart to:
Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Meatloaf. “Well I remember every little thing as if it happened only yesterday. . .”

I absolutely cannot:
Knit, crochet or do other crafty things with yarn. It makes me sweaty and nervous.

If I had my life to do over again, I would change:
Not a darn thing. Well, maybe the size of my thighs.
