The Princess and the Pea

We need a new mattress.

I realize there are wants and needs.

In this case, we need a new mattress. In my opinion.

It's not like it's falling inward, like my friend said hers was doing, but after waking up with a sore back for weeks on end, I started pondering our current mattress, and I realized it's over 20 years old. Is it even legal to sleep on a 20-year old mattress?

So this post is a question for you. Do you still sleep on a traditional mattress? If not, what are you using? Tempurpedic (I LOVE my Tempurpedic pillow, which really isn't actually the Tempurpedic brand, but it's one of those memory foam ones)? Sleep Number? Something else?

I'm torn. And clearly I need to do more research. Eamonn and I have both slept on a Tempurpedic or memory foam mattress. We both agreed it was possibly the best night's sleep ever.

And who doesn't want to sleep on a bed that you can put a glass of red wine on and then jump up and down next to it without spilling it?

Weird thing though--I have yet to talk to a chiropractor who recommend the Tempurpedic.

I have talked to two chiropractors about matresses and they have both recommended the Sleep Number bed. I have no experience with it. Our friends have one. He likes it; she is on the fence.

So, I'd love to know what you're sleeping on and how you like it.

If that doesn't sound too kinky.

I am sleeping on some kind of boring, plain old mattress, but its interesting that you posted this, because I have had a sore back for a few weeks now and just yesterday started wondering if it was the mattress. Ours isn't as old as yours, though ... only ten years or so. I'll be reading your responses with interest. :)

We've had a Tempurpedic for about 8 years and have really loved it. The initial "investment" was a bit of a shock but I'm told that these foam mattresses have zero problems with dust mites or bed bugs and, as an added bonus, you don't have to flip the darn thing. We've never tried the red wine test, but I will say, when either of us gets up in the morning before the other, the movement is imperceptible. P.S. Can someone explain the difference between a Sleep Number bed and an air mattress?

We have had a fake Sleep Number bed since 2001 and I love it. We didn't want to spend over $1000 on a bed, so I found a company online and ordered just a mattress for $600. It's great because you can change the firmness whenever you want. My parents have had an air bed for about 15 years and love it, too! Send me an email if you would like the name of the company.

I think my mattress is about 15 years old - it's time for a new one. I'm leaning toward a Sleep Number. Don & Karen have a knock-off brand and LOVE it. Tommy has a tempurpedic 9at 12 years old) and loves it. So I guess I'm not much help... I do have 2 friends that recently purchased Sleep Numbers and are happy with them. I need to call the hotel we stayed at in Montreal last year - best night's sleep in a hotel that I've ever had.

Also interested in this! We have a 13 year old mattress, and it is mostly comfortable still. I've slept on newer mattresses now and then and felt really sore when I got up. I know we'll need a new mattress soon, but fear getting one that worsens rather than helps my back problems. Curious about the whole memory foam thing...

Wow! I can't wait to show this blog to my husband. For about a year now, I have been saying that we need a new mattress...bigger and better! He, being a typical man says: "It's fine!" I usually turn in first and I am not kidding, when he gets in the bed, I not only am rudely awakened but I feel as though I am going to be catapulted across the room!!! I will wait to pursue this matter further until you have made your final decision based on all of the valuable feedback you are likely to receive. LOL

I'm following this too. I think the whole mattress industry is a total sham (no pun intended!) and I also think mattresses made now are MUCH less durable than the old mattresses are.

I'm very curious as to what you decide!

We have a pillow topped mattress and it's the best sleeping mattress I've ever been on. Yes I've tried my sisters Tempurpedic and my friends sleep number and none of them compare to my pillow top. Everyone who has had the opportunity to sleep in my bed (Not than many) or even sit on it comment how comfortable it is. I have no back pain and we've had this mattress almost 7 years and it's like we bought it yesterday - we do have the double sided pillow top and we flip it eery 6 months or so. Good luck in choosing!!!

Our Sleep Number rocks! We have had it for 4-5 years and my visits to the chiropractor pretty much ceased. Now I only go when I do something stupid. What I really like about the S.N. is that I can change the firmness to what I feel like for that day- I range from 40-55. My husband is a 80 - I would be all bruised if I slept on the 80 setting. So the sleep number works for us....and our cats.
