Obnoxious Hockey Mom Reporting for Duty

Over the weekend, we went to a hockey tournament in Aspen. As far as places to go for a hockey tournament, Aspen is not a bad place to be.

Especially if you win.

Which the boys did.

As you can see by the photo which shows that I am shamelessly bragging about my child. And this is where I oh so casually mention that along the way to winning this tournament, my son had a shutout, not once, but twice, against the team that was the state champion last year. Casual. I'm casual about it.

I will confess that when we scored against the team that was the state champion last year I:

1. Cheered so hard I fell off the back of my bleacher seat (I just dropped a few inches onto the concrete floor behind me, but I bet it was hilarious looking and caused the opposing fans to think, "She totally deserved that.").
2. Jumped up and down and screamed and nearly tore the sleeve off of the coat of the person sitting next to me. Multiple times.
3. Felt smug that our little mountain team beat the "big city kids."

Yes, I was an over-celebrator. If there were penalties for fans over-celebrating, I would have been fined. Or put in the penalty box, or however those types of crimes are punished.

In my defense, I don't yell derogatory things about the other team. That would be horrible. And plus, I don't know what I'm talking about to even yell anything derogatory. I'm more of a, "Yeah, Declan! Go VEHA! Come on boys! Skate, skate, skate!" type of person. I don't cheer when another team gets a penalty. Some other teams do this and I see how devastating it is on the kids. Come on, they're like 10 or 11. Or some are even younger, so do we really need to ridicule them?

Anyway,I'm going to try and dial my celebrating back for this weekend.

I'll let you know how that works out for me.

Congrats on the win!! I am also an obnoxious hockey mom. Our games start next weekend. I am the team manager, and have been for 5 seasons. This is my last season as manager, as next year he moves on to another club. I am very excited to be done managing... way to much drama for this momma. =) I just want to watch my kid have fun playing, don't need the drama. Have a great season!!

I'm not a hockey mom, but a soccer mom...my 11 year old daughter plays on a club team, goalie, too. In their first 10 games, her team has 7 wins, 0 losses, and 3 ties. In the first 9 games, the opposing teams had only scored 1 goal against her team (and her!) One! In 9 games! But then the team they played last weekend, scored 2 :( I don't know who was more upset, my daughter, her coach or me! They still won, but it wasn't a shutout.

Congrats Declan and his team!!! Have I told you about my yelling mom moment a few years back? In soccer, you are not allowed to have coaches behind the goal, which is pretty much where I stand to take pictures. I yelled something from there, something benign, like, "Shoot from there" or something, and the referee, who could not have been more than 10 years old himself, threw me off the field. As in, pointed his finger at me and made me leave. I was mortified. So now I yell nothing. I don't cheer encouragement or praise or anything if I've got a camera around my neck, no matter where I'm standing. Last week I opted to sit on the sidelines with the other parents, no camera, and I cheered. A few parents came up and introduced themselves to me ... they had no idea who I was. :)
